When I’m going to Grand Rapids, it’s usually to Michigan. But this time, I was leaving Michigan to go to Grand Rapids!
I found a campground called the Pokegama Dam State Campground right off of Route 2 (which I was taking) that would be a really convenient stop to overnight. They had water & electric hookups, plus a dump station.
Oh, and did I mention it was free?
They were doing a “soft opening” before their official opening for the season on May 1st. Fine by me!
This campground, as you could guess, was located right next to a dam on the Mississippi River. I was able to park about 20ft from the river and enjoyed some really nice trails that connected to the campground.
There was a path and walkway that went right over the dam.
Here’s a video I took of the dam in action.
After crossing the dam there was this fantastic trail system.
Cooper running around getting smelly.
Always follow the simple rules & regulations and you’ll be ok!
Overall I was really happy with this place. I was just expecting a place to park overnight, but didn’t expect such a cool trail system.
Here’s the route we took…
And some highlights from the drive!
